  • The District 1 Leadership Team (DLT) Engagement Pilot will kick off in September. The pilot will involve a community-based needs assessment and goal setting process to inform the Office of District Planning. The Office of District Planning (ODP) “improves opportunities for students by creating and supporting high-quality schools and programs. Every year ODP assesses the needs of students in every district in New York City.” The pilot will allow for D1 goals and priorities to flow from our own community-driven assessment. Please join the DLT meeting on September 17th (see below) for more information from the Engagement Pilot working group.
  • CEC 1 signed on to testimony presented to the Panel of Educational Policy on August 26th urging a change to a footnote in Chancellor’s Regulation A-101 (see attached). The footnote concerns the consideration of race as a factor in school admissions, and the proposed change will be on the agenda of the PEP’s September 29th meeting.
  • In July, the New York State Education Department awarded Socioeconomic Integration Pilot Program Grants to several schools, including District 1’s PS 15: Roberto Clemente School. The grant will pay for a 6 month community planning process and then, if the plans are approved, will fund a 2 year implementation period to work towards the goals mapped out in the planning grant. The planning grant is looking at creating a district-wide Family Resource Center, a school improvement initiative at PS 15, and socioeconomic-based, diversity-conscious student assignment planning.
  • Yolanda Torres will serve as the Executive Superintendent of the Division of Family and Community Engagement (FACE) at the NYC DOE – click for the press release.
  • Chancellor Carmen Fariña highlighted a District 1 school and principal in her August 2015 Principal Notes: “I was delighted to visit University Neighborhood Middle School’s summer program at New York University and to see students’ love of learning continue after the school year ended. The program was a fascinating approach to interdisciplinary learning, and its combination of academic disciplines highlighted the critical and creative thinking skills with which we must imbue our students. It was wonderful to see Principal Laura Peynado Castro take advantage of an excellent institution of higher education to expand offerings for her students. As an NYU graduate, I am well aware of the university’s strong academic tradition. As Chancellor, I encourage schools to reach out to their community to establish partnerships with local organizations and institutions. Educating our City’s students is a task for all of the City’s residents.”
